Summary of Hebrews

The Book of Hebrews is a sermon and pastoral call to persevere. The author of Hebrews is writing a sermon in letter form. In it, he assures Christians that because of the superiority of Christ, believers will remain faithful to Christ and persevere in the faith.

Unlike many of the epistles and letters in the New Testament, Hebrews has no formal introduction or greeting. (Hebrews 1:1-4)

  • Primary Recipients: Hellenistic Jews intellectually convinced that Jesus’ claims were true.

  • Jesus is the Eternal Lord (1:3; 2:9; 12:28)
  • Jesus is the Great High Priest (4:14-16; 7-10)
  • Jesus is the Founder and Perfecter of Our Faith (12:1-2)

What Jesus Did

  • Jesus secured forgiveness of sin (7:27; 9:12-14; 10:10-18)
  • Jesus inaugurated the New Covenant (7:22; 8:1-13)
  • Jesus obtained complete access to God (4:16; 10:22; 12:22-24)
  • Jesus ushered in the Kingdom of God (1:8; 12:28)

Jesus: God’s Final Word (Hebrews 1:1-2a)

God has spoken

  • God has spoken and revealed Himself in various ways. (Psalm 19; Psalm 68:33; Psalm 119; Romans 1; 2 Timothy 3:16; 1 John 1:1-4)

God has spoken to us

  • God spoke to our spiritual ancestors. Past and present, He speaks to His church.

God has spoken in these last days

  • The “last days” refers to the age when the Old Testament promises would be fulfilled. (Isaiah 2:2; Daniel 2:28; Micah 4:1; 2 Timothy 3:1; 1 Peter 1:20; 1 John 2:18) The “last days” began when Jesus arrived. (Galatians 4:4; Hebrews 7-8, 9:26)

God has spoken in His Son

  • God’s revelation in His Son Christ Jesus is both superior and final.

Jesus: The Son of God (Hebrews 1:1-13)

Jesus is the Divine Son

  • Jesus is the creator of the world (Hebrews 1:2, 8-10; John 1:1-2)
  • Jesus upholds the universe with His power (Hebrews 1:3; John 5:26; Colossians 1:17)
  • Jesus is the radiance of the glory of God (Hebrews 1:3; Isaiah 42:8; John 17:5)
  • Jesus is the exact imprint of God’s nature (Hebrews 1:3; John 1:18)
  • Jesus is worshipped (Hebrews 1:6; Luke 4:8)

Introduction to Angels

Nature of angels

  • Created: Ezekiel 28:15; Colossians 1:16-17
  • Have names: Michael, Gabriel
  • Have ranks: Seraphim, Cherubim
  • Spirit beings – take human form: Matthew 28:2; Hebrews 13:2
  • They are powerful and influential: Ephesians 3:10; 1 John 4:1
  • Many fell and will be judged: 2 Peter 2:4; Jude 1:6
  • Great number are elect: 1 Timothy 5:21; Hebrews 12:22; Revelation 5:11
  • They do not marry or procreate: Matthew 22:30

Role of angels

  • Mediate God’s revelation: Numbers 20:16; Luke 1:11; Galatians 3:19
  • Serve in God’s presence: Psalm 148:2; Isaiah 6; Revelation 5:12
  • Bring God’s judgment: Psalm 78:49; 2 Thessalonians 1:7; Revelation 9

Jesus Is Superior to Angels

1. Jesus has a better name than the angels (Hebrews 1:4-5)

  • Psalm 2:7 (Acts 4:25-28; 13:32-33)
  • 2 Samuel 7:16 (Luke 1:32)

2. Jesus is worshipped by angels (Hebrews 1:6)

Jesus: Greater Than Angels Part 2 (Hebrews 1:7-14)

3. Jesus is the creator of angels (Hebrews 1:7-12)

  • Angels are servants of God as part of the creation (Psalm 104:4)
  • Jesus is God ruling on the throne (Psalm 45; Psalm 89:14; Isaiah 9:7), the anointed one (Isaiah 61:1; Luke 4:18), and the eternal creator (Psalm 102:25-27)

4. Jesus is the ruler of angels (Hebrews 1:13-14)

  • Angels serve the people of God on their way to eternal salvation
  • Jesus is the savior of God’s people. “He is seated.” (Psalm 110:1; Hebrews 1:3)
  • Jesus is the Lord of God’s people and of all. “He is at God’s right hand.”
